The Why Behind 'The Reckoning': A Prelude to 'The Outlands'

Hello, passionate supporters and curious minds of 'The Reckoning',

Chris and I have been asked many times over why we chose to embark on the journey of creating 'The Reckoning'. So today, I'm here to unveil a few of the layers behind this decision and how it intricately connects to the upcoming feature film, 'The Outlands'.

A Story of Enduring Faith in Faltering Humanity

At its core, 'The Reckoning' is more than a tale of survival; it’s a narrative deeply rooted in the theme, "where humanity falters, faith endures." In an era where our world grapples with unprecedented challenges, this story serves as a beacon of hope and resilience. It reflects on the power of faith and the human spirit in times when the fabric of society seems to unravel.

Crafting the Backstory of 'The Outlands'

'The Reckoning' is not just a standalone film; it's a cinematic backstory to 'The Outlands'. This film delves into the origins of key characters, specifically Mac and Jude.

Both Mac and Jude are survivors in a world unrecognizable from what it once was. They've faced deep loss and witnessed the collapse of the society they knew, experiences that have left them hardened and wary of others. Their approach to the new world order is shaped by these shared experiences, yet their paths and reactions to their circumstances diverge, leading to a complex relationship.

Their journey, struggles, and evolution are pivotal in setting the stage for 'The Outlands'. By understanding their past, audiences will gain a richer, more profound connection with their characters and the larger narrative that unfolds in the feature film.

When Mac and Jude first meet, it's a clash of similar yet discordant survival philosophies. Both men have built walls around themselves, not just for physical protection but emotional as well. Mac, a character who's learned to trust only in his own strength and instincts, meets Jude, whose faith and hope, though severely battered, barely flickers amidst the darkness. This contrast sets the stage for an initial confrontation, rooted in their inability to immediately recognize their common ground.

Despite their initial clash, Mac and Jude are, in many ways, mirror images of each other. They share a skepticism towards others, a result of the betrayals and losses they've endured. Yet, it's these very similarities that, once acknowledged, eventually bridge the gap between them.

The evolution of Mac and Jude's relationship is crucial as it sets the foundation for their characters in 'The Outlands'. Their journey in 'The Reckoning' is not just about survival; it's about the discovery of kinship in the most unlikely of places and under the most challenging circumstances.

The Universality of Human Struggle

'The Reckoning' is set against the backdrop of a pre post-apocalyptic world, a setting that might seem distant and fantastical. However, the core struggles of our characters – dealing with loss, grappling with uncertainty, and searching for meaning – are universally human. In these characters’ journeys, we see reflections of our own battles, particularly in times of global crises, be they pandemics, environmental disasters, or social upheaval.

Faith in Times of Uncertainty

Our world, much like the one in 'The Reckoning', often finds itself at the crossroads of uncertainty and despair. In these moments, the film explores the role of faith – not just in a religious sense, but also faith in humanity, in the future, and in the potential for change. This aspect of the narrative encourages viewers to reflect on what faith means to them and how it can be a guiding force amidst chaos.

The Resilience of the Human Spirit

Another mirror to our reality is the portrayal of human resilience in the film. Despite the overwhelming odds, the characters of Mac and Jude find ways to persevere and adapt. This resilience is a testament to the human spirit, echoing how people in the real world face adversities with courage and determination.

A Cinematic Experience of Human Depth and Faith

We wanted 'The Reckoning' to be a cinematic experience that goes beyond the traditional post-apocalyptic genre. It’s a film that intertwines human depth with spiritual themes, exploring how faith and forgiveness can be a guiding light in the darkest of times.  At its heart, 'The Reckoning' is a study of human connections in extreme circumstances. It explores how relationships can evolve under pressure, how they can provide strength, provoke growth, trust, and sometimes expose weaknesses in the darkest of times.

The interactions among characters are designed to be thought-provoking, often blurring the lines between right and wrong, friend and foe, weakness and strength. This aspect not only sets the tone for 'The Reckoning' but also for 'The Outlands', creating a continuous thread of thematic exploration.

A Prelude to a Larger Narrative

In essence, 'The Reckoning' is the prelude to a larger narrative that will unfold in 'The Outlands'. It’s a film that we believe is timely and timeless – a story that resonates with current global sentiments while exploring timeless themes of faith and humanity. It's a narrative that we hope will resonate deeply, reminding everyone that even in the darkest of times, faith can and does prevail.
